My week so far
I'm having a three-illustration week, and it's only tuesday. Not complaining, I do kind of love my job. Even though there are weeks like this one, when I get the most unlikely assignments back to back. (By unlikely I actually mean *unlikeable*.) But sometimes I just have to buck down and draw Toby Keith.
That was yesterday (monday). Today, I had to come up with an illustration for a Sports story about KU recruiting football players from Dallas. These kinds of assignments, when I have to come up with illustrations about subjects that I know/care very little about, are always kind of weird and challenging and weirdly rewarding. I just boil it down to things that I can actually relate to, or get invested in somehow. With Toby Keith, it came down to: draw guy with cowboy hat and guitar and make him look kinda bad-ass (and achieve that Toby Keith resemblance). And do a finished illustration in less than 8 hrs. ( So I put on the headphones and get to work. But I listened to the Fugees' The Score on repeat while I worked on this, because I'll draw this douchebag, but they don't pay me enough to actually listen to his music.).
Sports illustrations are harder, because, well, I just never got the Sports thing *at all*. I don't get excited about sports, I don't care to watch them, keep track of them, or, really, care at all. Some sports are graceful or dynamic and fun to draw (wrestling, roller derby, basketball...) But most sports assignments are more about the behind the scenes crap, like this one. So I just try to concentrate on craft ad make something cool-looking.
The sports illustration runs on wednesday, Toby Keith on thursday. And tomorrow I have to do another illustration for the Faith page. I am amused that I always end up doing the Faith illustrations. I guess I can't be accused of being biased; I am equally unconvinced by all fairy tales.
Three illustrations in three completely different styles. I sure do like drawing for a living, even if it's Toby Keith...
